Birmigham Museum of Science and Industry
City of Birmingham
2022
A collaboration with muf architecture/art to envision Birmingham’s new museum of Science and Industry. We asked what a city museum is today, and how could it be relevant to and informed by the people of Birmingham. We developed a model of a continuous loop, where the city informs what the museum is, and the museum in turn expands into the city, inhabiting, effecting, and being effected by it. The museum, therefore, is never finished; just like the city, it’s in a state of continuous making and remaking.
In our proposal the museum site served as a hub for a series of satellite locations around the city which engaged people in their own niehgbourhoods. This enabled the museum to continously collect the life of the city, and make the city known to itself.
This historic museum collection could then be rotated through different locations across the city allowing local communities to create their own narratives and responses to the objects, so giving them a new and contemporary relevance.
