Alhikmah Mosque
Aberdeen
2015
A new mosque and community centre which is part new build and part adaptation of a former industrial building. The project was developed through consultation with the local community over a number of years, which included exploring the feasibility of various sites as well as brief development and design exploration.
The front elevation is a composition of granite blocks which references the materiality of the city, and cast concrete decorative panels form the main part of the facade. The arabesque pattern of the panels is inset with handmade ceramic star tiles made by artist Lubna Chowdhary. The building is an assemblage of references to local architecture and history, and traditions of Islamic art and architecture.
